INS legal expert appointed as European judge

One of Britain’s top nuclear law experts has been appointed as a judge of the European Nuclear Energy Tribunal.

Khalil Bukhari, International Nuclear Services’ Group General Counsel, was proposed for the position by the UK Government and this was confirmed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, based in Paris, France.

Describing the appointment as an ‘honour and a privilege’, Mr Bukhari is now one of seven judges on the tribunal, which was established 60 years ago, and resolves disputes concerning liability over nuclear incidents.

Mr Bukhari said: “This appointment is recognition of INS’s expertise as the world’s leading transporter of nuclear materials and just one example of the world-leading nuclear expertise within the NDA group.”

Mr Bukhari has been with INS for over 11 years, and in addition to his expertise in nuclear law, has significant experience in managing complex legal issues and contract negotiations at both national and international level.

As well as supporting the UK Government on nuclear transport law issues, Mr Bukhari is also chairman of the International Nuclear Law Association’s Transport Law Working Group, an IAEA-appointed Nuclear Liability expert, and a lecturer at the International School of Nuclear Law, in Paris.
