International Nuclear Services (INS) is a wholly owned subsidiary company of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. INS is the customer interface to over 20 utility customers in the UK and overseas for irradiated fuel management services and the transport of nuclear materials. We have around 140 staff, with offices and facilities in the UK, France, Germany and Japan.
We work together with the Sellafield site to provide a range of irradiated fuel management services to our customers from the following facilities:
- The Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant for the reprocessing of irradiated oxide fuel
- The Magnox Reprocessing Plant for the reprocessing of irradiated metal fuel
- The Sellafield MOX Plant for the manufacture of Mixed Oxide fuel
- A range of waste management facilities for the safe treatment and storage of different categories of waste
- A cask maintenance facility
We have safely transported radioactive cargoes worldwide for over 40 years without an incident resulting in the accidental release of radioactivity. Our subsidiary company, Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd (PNTL) is the world’s most experienced shipper of nuclear materials.
Our transport assets and capabilities include:
- An operational fleet of four ships, plus two more on order
- Dedicated marine terminals at Barrow (UK) and Dunkirk (France)
- A range of casks for the shipping of irradiated fuel, new MOX fuel and high level waste
- High Security Vehicles for the transport of MOX fuel
- Cask design, licensing and logistical support
International Nuclear Services has over 40 years experience of providing irradiated fuel services from the Sellafield site. We have the expertise to provide customers with specialist services associated with irradiated fuel management and the transport of nuclear material.
We are currently advising a number of Utilities and Government Agencies on their strategic and technical options relating to the back end of the fuel cycle.
