Transport

INS International Transport

In over 40 years of operations we have successfully transported over 2,000 casks of nuclear material including:

  • Used commercial nuclear fuel from Japan to ports in the UK and France
  • Vitrified high-level waste (HLW) from France to Japan
  • Mixed oxide (MOX) fuel from the UK and France to Japan Research reactor (Materials Test Reactor) used fuel from Japan and Europe to the United States

This has been achieved through the management of Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd (www.pntl.co.uk).

PNTL is the world's most experienced shipper of nuclear cargoes. Its ships are dedicated to the transportation of nuclear material that is classified by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) of the United Nations at its highest level of "Class INF 3". The "INF Code" regulates shipments by sea of used (spent) fuel, plutonium and highly radioactive waste.

We offer complete nuclear material transport solutions for our customer base of UK, European and Japanese utilities. Through our dedicated team we design and manufacture complex transport packages (casks) offering a full package approvals and licensing service from a dedicated team of experts.

We are currently building the required infrastructure including temporary storage and handling equipment, rail assets, port infrastructure and PNTL ships to enable the transport of highly radioactive nuclear waste from the UK to Europe and Japan as well as the transport of mixed oxide (MOX) fuel.

Each transport operation is managed to ensure the safety of its personnel and that of the general public to the extent that in its history there has never been an incident that resulted in the release of any radioactive material. An in house team has developed a full emergency response system that can be mobilised to support any transport operation and regular training exercises are held to ensure any eventuality can be handled.
