Team work across the NDA estate

Members of the INS EPAS team

Team working across the NDA estate is the way forward and the Engineering and Package Approvals Section (EPAS) within International Nuclear Services (INS) is leading the way. Although its core responsibility is the support of INS Operations, EPAS is employing its technical expertise to support other areas of the NDA estate on various technical aspects of nuclear transport.

An example of such support is the work being delivered on behalf of the Radioactive Waste Management Directorate (RWMD). EPAS has performed a number of studies which are aiding RWMD to define their waste transport and storage strategies.

These studies cover a number of technical areas, one of which is an ongoing work-stream developing an International Atomic Energy Authority (IAEA) Type B transport package. This will be optimised for UK rail transport, maximise the package internal volume, meet IAEA regulations and operational requirements.

These studies require EPAS staff to employ their knowledge of transport package design and operation, developed over the last 20+ years, and utilise their in-house 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software capabilities to define and optimise the proposals.

EPAS and RWMD are currently reviewing the next stages of development for this package, along with a number of other opportunities presented by RWMD.

For further information on INS’ capabilities please contact Martin Williams on 01925 832874.
