Japanese VIP Visit

Visiting members of JAEC and representatives of INS and NDA

During March 2010, INS and Sellafield hosted a visit to the Sellafield site of the Japan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC). The JAEC advises the Japanese Government on the basic policies for the promotion of research, development and utilisation of nuclear energy in Japan.

The visitors had come on a fact finding mission to understand more about the reprocessing of nuclear fuel and the waste management activities at Sellafield, along with more generally the UK's approach to safely managing nuclear waste.

The visitors were shown around the Thorp reprocessing plant, the Waste Vitrification Plant and the Vitrified Residues Export Facility.

JAEC Commissioner, Dr Mie Oba, commented that Japan and the UK had developed a strong relationship on nuclear matters over several decades of cooperation and international trade. She added that she hoped that this relationship would continue to flourish over the coming years.
