Safe and successful completion of highly active waste shipment to The Netherlands

Flask unloaded in Holland

Sellafield Ltd and International Nuclear Services, working in partnership, have completed the shipment of solid highly active waste to The Netherlands, therefore completing the return of all Dutch HAW from the UK. This fulfils contractual obligations and also UK Government policy by returning the waste to the country that benefited from the reprocessed fuel from which the waste originated.

The transport of the waste by rail, sea and road, is a tried and tested, safe and secure method. It has been undertaken by International Nuclear Services, the world’s leading transporter of nuclear material, which has an unparalleled safety record of more than 40 years and more than five million miles without any incident involving the release of radioactivity.

The waste is in a solid glass form, packaged inside 28 stainless steel canisters, which in turn sit within an extremely robust 100te transport flask. This flask is built to stringent international standards and was sealed, tested and secured before being transported. This ensured that it provided the shielding required to contain the radioactivity and to protect our employees, the public and the environment. It will now be stored at the HABOG store at Vlissingen in The Netherlands that will maintain that protection.

The transport took place in accordance with all relevant national and international regulations and has been licensed by the UK government and that of the Dutch authorities.
