Uranium Shipment

ISO freight containers are loaded at Sellafield

A consignment of reprocessed uranium left the Sellafield site in the last week en route to Russia, where it will be processed prior to its manufacture into new fuel.

The uranium is owned by European reprocessing customers in Germany and the Netherlands and is the eighth such shipment of material from Thorp. This latest shipment means that over 950te of uranium has now been exported from Thorp since 2001.

Jeff Adams, Head of Overseas Reprocessing, INS said: “INS is delighted to support our reprocessing customers with the recycle of their reprocessed uranium into new fuel. This is all part of demonstrating the closure of the fuel cycle.”
